Steampunk, once a niche subculture that barely had any followers, has finally entered the mainstream. But is anyone surprised this awesome niche blew up to what it is today? The retro-futuristic philosophy and aesthetic that steampunk espouses make for some very interesting and great-looking worlds. And fortunately for the rest of us, the genre also translates well to various media like video games, movies, and television shows With such a growing fanbase among the masses, some dedicated fans have pushed their enthusiasm for the genre to the next level by making some of the most epic steampunk-inspired costumes around. Here are some of the best ones:
Some amazing Steampunk influences can be seen in this amazing Star Wars cosplay. Princess Leia, one of the pivotal characters in Star Wars, is a great match for applying some Steampunk style to, as seen in this amazing picture from this recent Steampunk cosplay convention. Princess Leia isn't your usual damsel in distress, but she still goes around fighting in some fairly revealing outfits, similar to the one seen in this picture. Not the best outfit for blaster fights if you ask us. But either way, you can't deny the great Steampunk vibes on display with this fantastic Star Wars and Steampunk mash up.
This fantastic Deadpool cosplay is a beautiful example of how Steampunk and comic book universes can blend seamlessly. This outfit is so well put together that we were honestly left speechless when we first saw it. Featuring the classic Deadpool features that make him a fantastic character in the Marvel universe ( tons of guns and blades ) combined with some awesome Victorian style such as the top hat, black vest, and quintessential Steampunk features such as leather holsters and goggles, this outfit is another perfect example of how to combine Steampunk with pop culture.
This costume didn't win the 2014 Marvel costume contest in Comic Con for nothing. Marvel's resident genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist gets a steampunk treatment of his own with one of the most intricate Ironman costumes that has ever graced a Comic Con event. This steampunk Ironman suit- made by Marvel fan Thomas Willeford- is obviously modeled after the uniform of Victorian-era policemen (with its cap and baton on the side as a weapon), but it's still so obviously Ironman. The whole thing is filled to the brim with rivets, and is just so meticulously detailed but one can't help but wonder how Willeford was able to craft this thing from scratch.
A Victorian-era Catwoman toying around with steam-powered industrial machinery is an image that doesn't stray too far away from the character of this sophisticated character. So it's really not surprising that some creative fans gave Catwoman her own Steampunk treatment. One of the best steampunk-ed Catwoman costumes out there is this one worn by a fan during a recent Steampunk Convention. With a a weathered leather jacket, oversized goggles, and trademark utility belts, it's the best thing that any DC steampunk fan could hope for.
Another awesome addition from the DC Universe. This Flash cosplay is the perfect blend of Steampunk and comic book universes. The Flash's usual outfit has been modified to work with some great additions, such as Steampunk goggles, and trademark the leather straps and vest look common in many Steampunk outfits.
